Music has been used throughout history to mark momentous occasions, marching men into battle, coronating kings and queens, marking life moments like weddings and funerals. No words can evoke the spirit as music can. I was again reminded of this when visiting the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan this week. My lasting memory of the twin towers will be sailing up the East River in the summer of 2001, and the photo I took of my son sitting on the deck with the Twin Towers towering over Manhattan on a bright sunny day. In my lifetime, everyone can tell you where they were when President Kennedy was shot and where they were when they first heard that planes had flown into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on Sept. 9. I was in Washington at the time and watching it in live time walking on a treadmill. And while I had seen before most of the images that were in the museum, I was particularly struck when on the hour, the bagpipes began to play deep in the underground of the museum. Again, I was reminded of the power of music. Where were you that day?
